(CNN Spanish) — Half the week and you already want it to end? Wait a bit. We have to see what remains of the knockout stages of the Champions League.
On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, the first to qualify for the Champions League quarterfinals were Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City.
Both Bayern and Manchester City went through with ease: they finished their round of 16 bracket with aggregate scores of 8-2 and 5-0, respectively. On the other hand, Liverpool complicated their passage to the next phase, but managed to advance with a score of 2-1. Finally, Real Madrid got their ticket to the quarter-finals after Karim Benzema scored an amazing hat-trick in the second leg against PSG’s Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar.
Meanwhile, this Tuesday the visitors gave the chime. Atlético de Madrid qualified for the quarterfinals after winning the second leg of the round of 16 at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s stadium, by a score of 1-0 and 2-1 on aggregate. On the other hand, Benfica beat Ajax 1-0 away in the round of 16 second leg, with which the aggregate ended 3-2 in favor of Portugal.
The preview of the remaining Champions League round of 16 matches
Two more round of 16 matches will be played this Wednesday, with which this phase of the tournament closes.
On the one hand, we have Juventus vs. Villarreal. The first leg was tied 1-1. The second leg will take place in Turin, which could help “la Vecchia Signora” to reach the quarterfinals.
On the other, Lille and Chelsea will face each other. The first leg ended with a 2-0 lead for the English, but this day the French will seek the feat at home. It should be remembered that the second leg will be played in an unfavorable context for Chelsea, as the team has been indirectly affected by the Russian invasion of Ukraine due to the relationship between the team’s owner and Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich (who was disqualified as manager of Chelsea by the Premier League and sanctioned by the UK government) and the Kremlin.
