Germany will share Group E at the Qatar 2022 World Cup with Japan, Spain and the winner of the playoff between New Zealand and Costa Rica. This was determined by the draw held this Friday (04.01.2022) in Doha, just over seven months before the start of the championship. This year’s cup will be “for peace,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said.
Unlike other world championships, this time there is no so-called “group of death”, as those combinations that face four teams with aspirations to lift the cup are known. The opening match will take place at the Al Bayt stadium on 21 November to the local team against Ecuador, which together with Senegal and the Netherlands make up group A.
Due to the delays caused in the qualifying phase by the coronavirus and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, only 29 of the 32 teams that will fight for the cup are already defined. The other three will come from matches to be played in June. France, the current champion, will seek to defend its title in group D, where it will collide with Denmark, Tunisia and the winner of the clash between Peru and the representative of Asia, who will come out of the match between the United Arab Emirates and Australia.
world of peace
Hansi Flick, the German coach, told the German network ARD that the group that the four-time champions had “is exciting, and not easy, but we have great ambitions and it is an exciting challenge.” Argentina, meanwhile, will face each other with Poland, Mexico and Saudi Arabia in Group C, while in Group G Brazil will face Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon.
The president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, made a call to take advantage of the sports platform offered by the World Cup to build a better world. “Our world is divided, it is aggressive, and it is precisely on occasions like these that people come together to celebrate… The request made by the football community is, to all the authorities in the world, to stop the war. Please dialogue, in peace. We want this World Cup to be the World Cup of peace”, he affirmed.
The draw took place at the Doha Convention and Exhibition Center. Hosted by actor Idris Elba and presenter Reshmin Chowdhury, the gala featured live performances that showcased Qatar’s fusion of tradition and modernity. The World Cup final will be played on December 18.
