Moncayola gets to 100

Osasuna receive the Alaves this Sunday from 2:00 p.m. at the El Sadar stadium, a meeting that can be special for John Moncayola (Garínoain, 5/13/1998), since, if he plays against the team from Vitoria, it will be his 100th game with the red first team shirt. A spectacular figure for a footballer who three years ago played in the Third Division and who now accumulates spectacular records in the highest category and who has become one of the greatest exponents of Jagoba Arrasate’s team, the coach with whom he made the leap to the elite and with which he has become a benchmark for the Navarrese team.

Moncayola’s path to reach his current status has not been easy. His progression through the lower categories of Osasuna was slowed down during his youth stage, which is why in the 2016-2017 season, when due to age he had to go to Promesas, at that time in Second B, he was loaned to Iruña de Tercera, at that time subsidiary of the Navarrese club. A step back that in the end was decisive in propelling his career in a meteoric and definitive way.

Moncayola was picked up in the middle of that same season to help Promises maintain the category, something that the subsidiary did not achieve, but in the 2017-2018 season he became a fundamental piece of the team in the Third Division for a promotion that had a prize: preseason with the first team and debut in Leganés. It was in Butarque where Garínoain’s midfielder was given the alternative by Jagoba Arrasate in Osasuna’s return to the First Division, and since then he has been accumulating minutes and merits.

It was not an ephemeral debut, since in his first season he played 31 games, to which he added 37 the following and the 31 that he already accumulates in the current one for a total of 99. On Sunday, if he plays (he has only missed one game league during this financial year), will play his 100th match with the Osasuna first-team jersey, a figure he reaches without having yet turned 24 years old and with a contract that last summer was extended until June 2031. Because the club wants to convert to Moncayola in the new Dagger and the player has accepted the challenge. Time will now dictate the sentence, but Moncayola, for now, is going to put himself at 100.
