Say goodbye to football? Teófilo Gutiérrez left his sporting future in doubt

Teófilo Gutiérrez had a good week after being present in Deportivo Cali’s victory over Boca Juniors, a rival with whom he has had a certain rivalry since he played for River Plate. In addition to adding three points on the first day of the Copa Libertadores, this victory served as a boost to find a way to recover in the local competition.

The environment of the sugar group went from the joy of being champions to the concern of being in the last positions of the table. Despite being penultimate in the BetPlay I-2022 League, the boards have maintained confidence in the project of coach Rafael Dudamel, who in his first cycle took out the champion team from Clausura 2021.

In addition to being uncertain about sports news, in the last few hours a new doubt arose about the possibility of losing one of its key players. This is Teófilo Gutiérrez, who surprised Colombian soccer with a message in which he hints that he would retire soon.

Without giving many details, the 36-year-old attacker uploaded a photo to his Instagram account with his son in which he “passes the ball.” Immediately the fans of Cali, and soccer in general, showed his feelings in the post and even asked him not to hang up the Guayos.

I think the time has come. I pass you the ball my son. I love you soccer, thank you very much”, wrote the World Cup player with the Colombian National Team.

During his 16-year sports career, Teo has worn the colors of Barranquilla FC, Junior de Barranquilla and Deportivo Cali at the local level, while internationally he had the opportunity to be with Trabzonspor from Turkey, Cruz Azul from Mexico, Sporting de Lisboa from Portugal and in Argentina he defended the shirts of Racing, Lanús, River Plate and Rosario Central.

As for his track record, abroad he won a Turkish Cup and Super Cup, a Mexican Cup, a Cup and a league with River in Argentina, and a Portuguese Super Cup. In addition, in the local rental he was champion with Junior of two leagues, one cup and one Super League, and with Deportivo Cali he won the BetPlay II-2021 League in his first season outside Barranquilla.

After uploading that message, he has not spoken again about his sporting future, but it is expected that he is close to stepping aside after being in three qualifying rounds with the Colombian National Team, two Copa América and in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In addition, he participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

For now, Teófilo Gutiérrez is getting ready to face the team of his loves. This Saturday the Deportivo Cali will receive Junior de Barranquilla for date 15 of the BetPlay League I-2022duel that makes the difference and generates curiosity to see the waffle striker wearing other colors against the shark team on the court.
