Make a lot of money in French football? Possible! On one condition: you are under contract with either Paris St. Germain (PSG) or Olympique Lyon (OL). This can be concluded from the salary ranking published by the French sports newspaper “L’Équipe” on Tuesday.
Only players from the two clubs can be found in the top 20 of the best earners. The Swiss national player Ramona Bachmann (31), who is under contract with the Parisians, is not on the list. Kadidiatou Diani (26, PSG) and Wendie Renard (31, OL) share first place. The two each receive around 38,000 Swiss francs a month – an annual salary of 456,000 francs.
Brutal pay gap
Interesting comparison: the top earner for men in Ligue 1 is PSG star Neymar (30). The Brazilian brings in four million Swiss francs a month – an annual salary of 48 million francs. Over 100 times more than the highest paid woman!
While Djani’s and Renard’s annual wages still read very decently, the wage gap within the league is striking. Lyon and Paris pay an average gross monthly salary of 13,000 Swiss francs and 10,000 francs respectively. The players in third-placed Bordeaux have to be content with just 4,000 francs.
