FCB lost 2-1 to Marseille
FCB narrowly loses the round of 16 first leg of the Conference League in Marseille. However, Basel can still calculate chances for the second leg.
It’s quite a decent position for the second leg. After the 2-1 defeat at home, FCB only have to make up one goal in a week to at least force an extension. Looking at the game, the result is actually very good. The Baslers were the weaker side in Marseille for long stretches and were lucky that the hosts only got two goals from Arkadiusz Milik. A Basel defender twice saved for the defeated Heinz Lindner on the line. A Marseille striker also hit the post twice.
In the second half, Basel didn’t have a single shot on goal until the 79th minute. Substitute Wouter Burger then sent Sebastiano Esposito on his way with a clever through ball. The young Italian kept his nerve in front of Steve Mandanda and scored the goal in Basel. A little later, a home defender almost defeated the Marseille keeper for the second time. But Mandanda scraped the failed return off the line. So it stayed at 1:2. A result that should give Basel courage for the second leg.
