What happened to Nández? From figure with Tabárez to ostracism with Alonso

Nahitan Nández was number one in the national team until the last game that Óscar Tabárez directed against Bolivia in La Paz, on November 16. He acted both as a winger and as a winger on the right, but from one day to the next he disappeared, he was not called up even in Diego Alonso’s first 50-player list and he did not play anymore in Cagliari, his team since 2019.

With the World Cup in Qatar seven months away, his presence in the national team during the Qatar event is unknown. Before the World Cup, the Celestes plan to play at least five friendlies in the FIFA windows of June and September/October, after which Alonso will confirm the World Cup squad. It is a last chance that the player will have -if he is summoned- to define his participation in his second World Cup, after playing in Russia 2018.

Nández is recovering from an injury to the lateral ligament in his right knee, according to what the Italian club reported in March.

Nahitan Nandez

According to information from the Italian media, he is in the last stage and the most optimistic indicate that he may be at the command of coach Walter Mazzarri on April 16 against Sassuolothe same team he last played against on January 19, nearly three months ago.

This coming Saturday 9 Cagliari faces Juventus, but the presence of the Uruguayan is still unlikely, that he must also define a matter with the Uruguayan Justice after a complaint by his ex-partner for domestic violence.

Of those who played the most

The midfielder that emerged in Peñarol and then went through Boca Juniors, He is the sixth player who added the most minutes in the Qualifiers on the way to Qatar, which indicates the importance he had for coach Óscar Tabárez.

After Diego Godín, Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, José María Giménez and Luis Suárez, Nández appears with 914 minutes played in 13 games of the 18 that make up the qualifying round.

He only missed five games: the last four directed by Diego Alonso and one against Paraguay on June 3, 2021.

His possible pass to Inter was highly commented

In the Copa América in Brazil, he was in all five of Uruguay’s gamesthe last three in the starting team.

Whenever he played, he was highlighted by the back and forth, and the delivery. Against Argentina, on November 12, Referee He qualified him with 6 points and the following concept: “The usual dedication, this time, not on the side, but in the midfield. He was one of the best of the team for his dedication and his mark. From the outset, he missed a goal against a bad definition and a great save by Dibu Martínez”.

After participating with the national team in the November matches, Nández returned to Italy and continued to compete with his team. It was a chaotic month for his teammates Diego Godín and Martín Cáceres, who were separated from the Sardinian squad.

Complaint and covid

Nández has a contract with Cagliari until 2024 and an exit clause of €35 million. During the last period of European passes it was sought by Premier League clubs such as Leeds and West Ham, as well as Juventus, Napoli and Inter Milan; the latter still maintains his preference for the Uruguayan midfielder.

Last December Nández traveled to Uruguay to spend the end of the year holidays with his family in Punta del Este. On December 28 he celebrated his 26th birthday and on December 30 He was denounced by his ex-partner Sarah García in the Maldonado Domestic Violence Unit.

The Justice ordered the arrest of the soccer player and he went to his home on Friday, December 31, but Nández had flown to Italy on a private flight the day before (he stated that he traveled on December 29) from the Laguna del Sauce airport.

In Cagliari he played 90 matches

When he arrived in Italy, he tested positive for covid and on Saturday, January 1, the soccer player defended himself through a statement he published on social networks, where he pointed out that the reported facts “were false.”

Nández has not returned to Uruguay since then and according to judicial sources informed Referee, when he does, he will be called to testify in the case that was opened to him. The possible arrest (the order is only for the national territory), will be a decision made by the prosecutor when the player returns to the country.

When the complaint became public, the press and the general public speculated about the presence or not of the soccer player in the national team due to this issue. The technician Alonso never summoned him and when consulted, he repeated in different media: “I’m not going to talk about the Nández situation”.

Past and future

Nández emerged in Peñarol and debuted in the First Division in 2014 with coach Jorge Fossati. In 2017 he was transferred to Boca Juniors, where he played until 2019 and won a Super League and a Super Cup.

In July 2019 he made the leap to Cagliari, pass that was made for almost US$ 20 million. In the Sardinian team he has played 90 games so far and scored four goals.

He debuted in the national team in 2015 and appeared in 49 games.

His first steps in Peñarol

On March 24, after Uruguay qualified for Qatar with the victory against Peru, Nández wrote on his Instagram account: “A long road that comes to an end in the best way. With good and bad moments but all together to the World Cup. Congratulations boys for today’s victory. Let’s go up Uruguay”.

In Cagliari they await his return to the courts as if he were one more reinforcement for the team that in the last seven dates of the Italian league will try to get out of relegation definitively. In the selection his future is indefinite. The coach gives no clues, the player was not called up during 2022 and the path to the world championships is getting narrower for players trying to get into the ultimate roster.

Although Nandez is a multifaceted player, he usually plays on the right flank and that way, Alonso found solutions with Ronald Araujo at full-back and with Facundo Pellistri at midfield forward.
